Un pannello preferenze per cambiare lingua (origine) ai trailers di Front Row
Questo simpatico software è un pannello preferenze da installare in Mac OS X, Front Row Trailerspermette di modificare il sito origine da cui vengono scaricati i trailers cinematografici di Front Row. Sarà così possibile cambiare la lingua, e il tipo di trailer richiesto (HD/normale).
Il software fà anche più di questo: permette di controllare e aggiornare le componenti più importanti per la visione di filmati (aggiorna Quicktime, Perian, e Flip4Mac). Sul mio sistema ha anche rilevato e aggiornato Perian prima ancora che Perian stesso riconoscesse di avere un update disponibile!!!Nota finale: ad ogni modifica dei parametri di FrontRow richiede l'inserimento della password, per evitare questo inconveniente (a scapito di un po' di sicurezza) è possibile digitare su terminale:sudo chmod o+w /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/BackRow.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Trailers.plistIl software è freeware e scaricabile dalla pagina del suo creatore Cédric Luthi (in Francese), oppure con questo link diretto alla versione 2.1.2A preferences panel to change the language (source) of trailers in Front Row

A little tip: how to open more than one inspector window

With the inclusion of "Inspector" windows in most Mac OS X applications, you're constantly jumping around between the different tabs in the window. This little tip will save you time as you'll no longer need to jump around from tab-to-tab! Here it goes:All you have to do is hold down the option key whilst clicking on the tab you want.
And there you have it ... the simplest Mac 101 we've done yet. When you click on the tab you want, a new inspector window will appear with the tab you just clicked. You can open as many as you want! This works well in Pages, Keynote, and pretty much any application that supports inspector windows.
Pratically you can open more than one inspector window holding the option key (alt). I found this tip very useful, so I'm sharing it with you.

Smultron Text Editor

Good developer's editor
Smultron is a text editor for developers that supports syntax colouring for a big number of languages. It is very useful to make fast changes on source code files.
TextWrangler (recently updated to 2.3) is another good editor, but Smultron has an intuitive and simple interface with a lot of hidden features. Unfortunately Smultron has an ugly (for me) icons set, but Gaetan Ark built a patch to resolve this problem.
Hidden preferences:
some parameters of the application could be changed only using terminal, If you don't make this modification:
defaults write org.smultron.Smultron KeepEmptyWindowOpen -bool NO
Smultron will keep the project window open after the last document within has been closed.

Presentation for the course: Image processing
For the course of "Methods and Technologies for Image Processing", held by Professor Negrini, we have been asked to create a presentation (15-20 minutes long) to illustrate one of the arguments that were treated only marginally during the lessons. Due to my passion for the photography, I decided to choose as an argument: the images acquisition and CCD sensors used in high-end digital cameras (sensors mounted on DSLR).
The presentation is quite short and is available for viewing in the following formats:
- printable version with notes and a draft of the speech (useful to better follow the presentation)
- pdf version of the presentation
- original version for Apple Keynote 08 (zip)

Ma chi fà le conversioni euro-dollaro?
Qualche ora fà si è concluso il keynote al MacWorld di San Francisco, e di cose da dire ce ne sono un po'.

Inizio da quella a mè più "cara", anche se dovrebbe essere l'ultima in ordine cronologico: Ma chi cazzo fà le conversioni euro dollaro a Cupertino?
US vs Europa
- Primo confronto - Apple TV: senza guardare al tasso di cambio vorrei fare notare come in America il prezzo sia diminuito da 299$ a 229$, ovviamente qui da noi tutto rimane uguale (299€), e và beh, faccio finta di niente.
- Secondo - Time Capsule 1TB: America 499$, Italia 499€, facile no? Basta fare 1:1, più semplice di così! Si vede che a Cupertino amano fare le cose semplici! ...Peccato che la widget di Apple mi dica che il cambio Euro - Dollaro è 1.488, ciò significa che qui da noi in verità Time Capsule la paghiamo 742.462$. Giusto giusto, qualcuno potrebbe dire che da noi c'è anche l'IVA, ma se non sbaglio è il 20% (altissima) => 499*1,2 = 598,8. In poche parole Apple si intasca poco più di 143 dollari (che sono circa 96 euro e mezzo) per ogni unità venduta. Spero di sbagliarmi da qualche parte, o meglio, spero che correggano i prezzi di questo prodotto! 100 euro non sono pochi, fanno cambiare la mia visione da "prezzo competitivo" a "mi state pigliando per i fondelli?"
- Terzo e ultimo confronto - MacBookAir: America 1799$, Italia 1699€, qui quantomeno non hanno fatto il rapporto 1:1. Ma facendo ancora i conti si scopre che con un buon 20% di IVA dovremmo pagare questo gioiellino 2159$ (arrotondati per eccesso) e quindi circa 1448 euro. Apple si intasca 375$ (251euro) per ogni unità venduta!
Stiamo rasentando la follia, quando a Cupertino compreranno una calcolatrice, o useranno quella di uno dei loro Mac? Ancora un po' di tempo e converrà prendere un volo fino in America e portare a casa un po' di prodotti. Vorrei prendere una Time Capsule, ma mi rifiuto categoricamente di pagarla 100 euro in più rispetto ad un Americano. Se qualcuno và già in America ho un favore da chiedere

Ora che mi sono sfogato, un po' di impressioni:
1. 
Time Capsule - Lo trovo un gran bel prodotto un NAS che fà anche da Airport Extreme, proprio quello che mi servirebbe: un bell'aggeggio che spari connettività WiFi-n e che metta in condivisione stampante e capacità di storage! Senza contare il supporto per più Time Machine contemporanee!
2. Nuove features su iPhone e iPod Touch - Speravo in un annuncio legato ad un modello 3G di iPhone e ad un espansione dei paesi in cui venisse venduto, ma niente. La novità più interessante è la funzione myLocation di Google Maps, che come avevo previsto è stata implementata nell'applicazione di mappe. Buono l'aggiornamento dell'iPod touch, ma francamente poteva essere fatto anche prima.
3. Noleggio Film - Finalmente arrivati su iTunes, a mio parere sono un vero punto di forza nella strategia home entertainment che Apple sta portando avanti, come ha scritto Mauro nei commenti: "sostituiamo i Blockbuster e rendiamo il cinema disponibile a prezzi accessibili". Buona anche la possibilità di noleggio di film HD (Purtroppo solo 720p) con audio 5.1, ora Apple TV ha un suo vero perchè! ...ed è pronta a risorgere! Ho l'impressione che questa sia una nuova svolta nel mercato dei media digitali, Apple ha visto lontano, e presto i risultati si vedranno.
4. MacBook Air - Bel prodotto, molto leggero e bello esteticamente, ma non adatto alle mie esigenze, è tanto sottile che sono stati costretti ad eliminare troppe cose. Cosa ne penso...
- Porte esterne ridottissime - Se posso rinunciare ad avere un'unità ottica interna, non posso di certo rinunciare ad una porta ethernet (che uso quasi tutti i giorni), sì c'è sempre l'adattatore USB, ma peccato che le porte USB presenti siano ben UNA! Se volessi usare una chiavetta USB mentre sono connesso via ethernet, come farei? dovrei usare un hub USB, che scomodità, mi servirebbero 8000 adattatori da portarmi sempre appresso. Vedo questo prodotto destinato principalmente al mercato Americano, dove c'è una WiFi dietro ogni angolo.
- Batteria - Non è intercambiabile, e la durata non è così sperlativa, mi aspettavo meglio!
- Prezzo - In dollari abbastanza buono per la fascia di mercato in cui si vorrebbe inserire
- Espansione - Impossibile, 2GB di RAM ci sono, e quelli ti tieni, la scheda video è una Intel integrata ovviamente con memoria condivisa(scarsa)
- Processore - E' la cosa che più mi ha impressionato, la CPU di questo gioiello è in tutto e per tutto un Core 2 Due, ma più piccola del 60% rispetto al modello standard! E' incredibile, questo mi fà pensare che lo spazio di miglioramento per i processori "di tutti i giorni" c'è, è solo un fatto di marketing se non fanno uscire immediatamente processori stra pontenti (POTERE ILLIMITATOOOO).
- Touchpad multitouch - Veramente bella e comoda, non vedo l'ora di averne una!
- Tastiera - L'avrei preferita bianca come quella dell'iMac, ma il fatto che sia retroilluminata la rende ugualmente bella.
- Ecologia - Grande è l'impegno di Apple nel rendere "verde" queto prodotto, mi piacciono proprio i materiali usati.
Sebbene il MacBook Air sia la novità più ecclatante, ciò che mi ha colpito maggiormente sono la Time Capsule e il noleggio film, con tanto di aggiornamento di Apple TV. Speravo di meglio, terrò il mio fidato iBook ancora a lungo! Il MacBook Air doveva quantomeno fluttuare da solo nell'aria... meglio l'iPod invisa! Aspetterò la prossima revisione dei MacBook che saranno sicuramente in alluminio, con tastiera backlight, trackpad multitouch, e schermo a LED vetroso...sognare non costa.
Quasi dimenticavo dove sono i nuovi cinema display? Ma ne vendono ancora di quelli vecchi?
Il post è venuto lunghissimo, quasi nessuno si sbatterà mai a leggerlo, ma io neanche me ne sono accorto... 'notte

Apple Keynote: sono troppo curioso
Appena arrivato a casa da una serata ad arrampicare in palestra a Villaguardia, vedo campeggiare sul sito di Apple lo stesso slogan che nelle ultime ore si è intravisto al MacWorld di San Francisco
Che io ricordi, mai è stato aggiornato il sito di Apple prima di un keynote! Che sia qualcosa di grosso?
Poi scopro via whois che i domini MacBookAir sono stati registrati probabilmente da Apple (2+2=...)
Non riesco a controllarlo ma è più forte di me, sono curiosissimo, peccato che domani mentre il keynote starà iniziando (credo alle ore 6 GMT+1 - Roma) io sarò a fare lezione di Advanced Professional Communication, chissà se riuscirò a concentrarmi, è come una malattia.
Per tutti i fan di Apple il keynote è un evento da seguire secondo per secondo, quasi peggio di Laura che preme F5! Ogni hanno è uno spettacolo, uno show a cui non riesco a resistere, appena arriverà la registrazione video andrò subito a vederla! Sembra un comportamento infantile, ma mi consola il fatto di essere in buona compagnia, con altri milioni di persone pazze almeno quanto me!
...e ora a nanna, che domani si lavora!

Calculate which day of the week was...
Good evening to everybody!
After seeing the following incredible video of Arthur Benjamin, a "mathemagician" I surfed on the internet to find the algorithm that allows, providing a date, to discover what day of the week was.
5 digits...a square of 5 digits!!! amazing...
The formula for the calculation was invented in 1882 by Christian Zeller a German mathematician. The also called Zeller's congruence can be found here below, adapted to the Gregoriano calendar.
where
- h is the day of the week (0 = Saturday, 1 = Sunday, 2 = Monday, ...)
- q is the day of the month
- m is the month
- J is the century (actually )
- K the year of the century ().
Since Arthur Benjamin is a monster to do the calculations and I'm not so good, I created a javascript for the automatic calculation, and it is now available on the laboratory's page

It shows the CD / DVD inserted in your Mac in a cool way
DiscTop is one of the most beautiful application that I have recently installed on my Mac. Have you ever forget to have a CD / DVD in the drive of your computer? ...With this software, absolutely not intrusive, will be difficult to forget one there!
As soon as I installed the program on my iMac, It has recognized the correct position of the optical drive, and it has showed me the CD with its correct size on my desktop. To improve the application look it downloads and shows the cover of the CD inserted as disk background image. As "one more thing" it allows disk management with a small control placed at the corner of the CD drive.

Utility for erase files
Graveyard (Mac OS X)
Even if its name is not so happy 
this application could be very useful, I put it on the finder's toolbar to give it easy access. This sw delete files/folders without put them on trash, but you must pay attention when you want to delete something because Graveyard deletes original files/folders instead of aliases.
I find this utility very useful to delete files stored on a pen drive, in fact Mac OS X do not delete them directly, it simply put them on trash, if you want to delete definitively them you must empty the system trash (and sometimes I don't want to do it).
